Victory Day of Bangladesh

Victory day (Bengali: বিজয় দিবস Bijôy Dibôs) is a national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated on December 16 to commemorate the victory of the allied forces over the Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

The nation is set to celebrate the 49th Victory Day today, marking the most precious day when the country was liberated from the Pakistani occupation forces after a nine-month war.

Forty-nine years ago on December 16 1971, Bangladesh was born as an independent country under the leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In 1971 Bangladesh with the help of India fought the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan to become an Independent country.

Last year, the celebration reached new heights, following Unesco's recognition of Bangabandhu's historic March 7 Speech as part of the world's documentary heritage.

Unesco on October 30 announced the prestigious acknowledgement to one of the world's most glorious speeches, through which Bangabandhu effectively declared the country's independence during a mammoth public rally on Ramna Racecourse ground (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka on March 7, 1971.

The speech provided inspiration to the Bangali nation in their quest for freedom and energised freedom fighters in freeing the country.
